About Me
Dr. Oladoyin Kolawole is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NJIT. He is the director of the Geomechanics for Geo-Engineering and Sustainability (GGES) Lab at NJIT. Prior to joining NJIT, Dr. Kolawole was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Texas Tech University, before later working as a Faculty Fellow (Visiting Faculty) at Hope College, Michigan. He developed the “biogeomechanics” concept, which studies the mechanical responses of microbial-rock interactions. His interests are in geomechanics, geotechnical engineering, and underground infrastructure, including the latest experimental and computational studies of the fundamental mechanics of geomaterials (rock and soil) and cementitious materials, with their applications to surface and subsurface infrastructures. Dr. Kolawole is a recipient of the Future Leader Award and the Distinguished Service Award from the American Rock Mechanics Association (ARMA). He currently serves on the Committee on Geological and Geotechnical Engineering at the U.S. National Academies.

Research Interests
Dr. Kolawole’s Geomechanics for Geo-Engineering and Sustainability (GGES) Lab at NJIT is an integrated research lab focused on geomechanics, geotechnical engineering, and underground infrastructure. His unique interdisciplinary research group conducts fundamental studies on the behavior of geomaterials (rock and soil) and cementitious materials in response to loading (static and dynamic) conditions and to changes in stress, pressure, and temperature; with applications to surface and subsurface infrastructure. Additionally, He researches geomaterial-fluid interactions due to thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanical processes with applications to infrastructure, energy, and sustainability. He also studies mechanical responses due to geomaterial interactions with biological and bio-inspired processes, and their applications to geo-energy resources and climate change mitigation.
