Frank Biocca
About Me
Dr. Biocca, a former Silicon Valley executive working on mobile and portable computing, has held several endowed chaired professorships including World Class University Professor (Samsung SKKU University), Newhouse Endowed Chair (Syracuse) and AT&T Endowed Chair (MSU).
He has been a faculty member or researcher at ten universities spanning America, Europe, and Asia, including the University of California-Berkeley, Helsinki School of Economics, Stanford University, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, among others.
Dr. Biocca has received over 15 top research, paper awards, or impact awards in the areas of human-computer interaction, information and communication systems, and philosophy of technology. These awards include an outstanding book award for research on virtual reality systems.
Dr. Biocca founded, managed, and directed the M.I.N.D. Labs network, a network of lab facilities in several countries. He has been in the management or on boards of entrepreneurial companies in the US, Finland, and Korea.
Dr. Biocca has been a keynote or invited speaker at over 80 conferences and universities in America, Europe, South America, and Asia. His research has been translated into Spanish, Italian, Finnish, French, and Portuguese.
Dr. Biocca’s research and commentary on technology, information, and cognition have been featured in the New York Times, CNN, BBC World Service, the Washington Post, Discovery Channel, USA TODAY, NBC, Voice of America, and over 60 broadcast and print organizations spanning more than 15 countries.
Dr. Biocca was promoted to full, endowed, chaired professor only seven years after completing his Ph.D.

Teaching Interests
Dr. Biocca has taught human-computer interaction, computing and cognition, and VR/XR/AR design to mostly master’s and Ph.D. students for most of his teaching career.
His Ph.D. students have gone on to be faculty, provosts, and deans at universities in the US, Europe, and Asia, including Stanford, USC, and many other research institutions.
Dr. Biocca and his lab have mentored students who have gone on to design or lead computing systems at Google, Meta, Microsoft, and several companies and startups in the US, Europe, and Asia.
His Ph.D. students have gone on to be faculty, provosts, and deans at universities in the US, Europe, and Asia, including Stanford, USC, and many other research institutions.

Research Interests
Dr. Biocca’s research areas include the design of virtual and augmented reality interfaces, design and testing of computer systems for training and behavioral change, theoretical work on augmented cognition and presence during immersive computing.
Dr. Biocca has co-authored or edited more than 200 publications including ten books and several patents in the areas of human-computer interaction, communication technology, and cognitive psychology. This work has been cited in more than 25,000 research papers.
Dr. Biocca’s research teams have worked within 45 funded projects that have been supported by over $20,000,000 in funding from the National Science Foundation, European Union, the National Institutes of Health, and several other funders.
Dr. Biocca’s research projects or consulting have also involved partnerships with major technology corporations including Amazon, Siemens, Nokia, 3M, CBS, ABC, and other technology or communication companies,
