About Me
Raja Roy (Associate Professor, Innovation and Entrepreneurship) earned his Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on technological innovations in high-tech industries and entrepreneurship. Through his research on machine tools, robotics, image sensors, and spacecraft, he has examined the processes by which established organizations create breakthrough innovations and how small entrepreneurial firms disrupt established firms. He has published 20 research papers in peer-reviewed journals, including 10 in FT50-listed journals. He was invited by NASA to present his research at three seminars and served as a panelist at the National Academy of Sciences seminar on NASA's Discovery and New Frontiers Programs. His recent publications include two FT50 papers in 2025, both analyzing NASA's processes for designing the Space Shuttle. Currently, he is researching NASA's design of the Ingenuity Martian helicopter. With his Ph.D. student and colleague, he examined how unicorn startups differ from other startups, providing unique insights that only a few faculty members worldwide can share with undergraduate and graduate entrepreneurship students. In his research on A.I., he is applying the insights from his research on industrial robotics, which explored the shakeout of American firms during the first A.I. gold rush v.1 in the 1970s and 1980s, to predict which firms are likely to survive when the current A.I. gold rush v.2 boom turns to bust.
