About Me
Prof. Bengu, close to 3 decades, has taught variety of subjects including Computer Simulation Modeling and Analysis, Advanced Statistics-Design of Experiments, Engineering Economy, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Production Processes. Her philosophy of teaching is to emphasize fundamentals with
association to real life examples in an interactive learning environment. She has built a Distributed intelligent learning system design DISTILLS where the learning process simulated the faculty and student interaction. System diagnosed the deficiency in student understanding and provided an interactive tutorial to teach these concepts with most advanced technological tools. After several innovative ideas to help the students to learn better, she has built a prototype and put it in use in NJIT-Chem 134 Lab course.
While building the Intelligent Learning tools, she served as director of MPIDS, Multimedia Production and Internet Delivery Systems Center funded by NJSTC-NJCMR (NJ Commission on Science and Technology). After these tools were actively deployed in NJIT, Chem. Lab Course is currently helped more than 10,000 Frehman students to learn better in over 15 years The system is also shared with Rutgers Chem dept. and is disseminated via Gateway E.E.Coalition and shared with Prentice Hall Publishers.
After several years, she also received an unsolicited grant from the NCA, National Academy of Engineering for the DISTILL system she has built.
She was awarded by various agencies, NSF, NJSTC, and Gateway-NSF.
She has devised a new methodology for Simulation Output Statistical Data Analysis using a combination of Non-Overlapping Techniques and Systematic Sampling, funded by NSF.
As part of Remotely located Concurrent Design Engineering Project funded by Gateway-NSF. She and her students collaborated with Penn State, Ohio State, and Cooper Union to build a Feeding Device for a handicapped student of Penn State University. The remote collaboration of distant University students on a multi-disciplinary but a common unifying project was a pioneer study of its time when Internet Browser just deployed.
Another study again funded by NSF helped to build Ineractive Simulation Tutorials for teaching Environmental Issues in Engineering Freshman Curriculum.
She has been invited to China to teach on several occasions and also received outstanding faculty grant award to collaborate and teach at the Beijing Institute of Technology. Currently she is helping several local industries such as
AeroSpaceElectronics Industry( e.g Crane ). and Pharmaceutical Industry (e.g Roche) and Public Sector Industry (e.g. American Water Inc.), using advanced Simulation, Optimization and Design of Experiment tools while providing students real life projects and increased job opportunities. These are examples of how Prof. Bengu have introduced active learning with real life industry examples in Engineering curriculum that has benefited NJIT students over many years
