Maura Deek

Maura Ann Deek is Senior University Lecturer in Informatics at NJIT where she beganher academic career as Adjunct Instructor in 1986. She received her A.S. Liberal Artsfrom Middlesex County College, 1980; B.S. Environmental Science from RutgersUniversity, 1982; and M.S. Computer Science, 1985 from New Jersey Institute ofTechnology (NJIT).Prior to joining NJIT, Maura worked as Programmer and Knowledge Engineer for amajor utilities company where she led the development of artificial intelligence/expertsystem applications used for the technical training of employees as well as in actual fieldinspection settings.Maura has taught courses in computer science, information systems, and informationtechnology, at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She is a seasoned online instructorwith over three decades experience in delivering education to traditional and adultlearners, on campus and online. At NJIT, in addition to her teaching role, Maura has hada longstanding, active involvement in pre-college educational research projects funded bystate and federal agencies. She has served in a variety of roles including researchassociate, curriculum developer, and teacher trainer, with a focus on technologyintegration in the K-12 mathematics and science curriculum. Maura has journal andconference publications in both areas of online learning and technology integration in thecurriculum.Outside the profession, Maura is interested in environmental and civic causes. During herspare time, she volunteers at a local public elementary school where she helps withstudents’ tutoring and assessment; Maura is also an avid reader who enjoys traveling,learning about other cultures, visiting museums, and knitting.
